Valve engineers report that they have assembled a respectable inventory of Steam Machines even as component costs soar, with the entry‑level model still carrying a $1,049 price tag.
The worldwide RAM shortage has pushed memory and storage prices to record highs, turning production of the living‑room gaming box into a costly endeavour. At the start of 2026, Valve was unsure whether any units would be ready for launch. Engineers Yazan Aldehayyat and Pierre‑Loup Griffais said current stock is lower than pre‑crisis levels but far better than the bleak outlook they faced earlier in the year.

A reservation queue opened last Monday to distribute the limited supply, and Valve hopes to narrow the gap between demand and availability as quickly as possible. Aldehayyat noted that meeting day‑one demand is challenging even in normal circumstances, but the company is proud of the sourcing work that has delivered a “pretty good” amount of hardware under the circumstances.
