Strauss Zelnick, chief executive of Take‑Two Interactive, told IGN that Rockstar’s choice to debut GTA 6 without a physical disc was based on what’s “right for the project,” not on concerns about pre‑launch leaks. While he declined to promise a future disc edition, Zelnick said the company remains “open‑minded” and won’t rule anything out at this stage.
He noted that more than 90 % of Take‑Two’s sales now come from digital downloads, arguing that for blockbuster titles a disc “doesn’t really make sense for the consumer” because players are already online. Zelnick also distanced the decision from Sony’s plan to stop producing PlayStation discs in 2028, emphasizing that Take‑Two’s move is independent of any external pressure. The announcement has sparked a broader debate, with gamers and industry groups pushing back against the shift toward an all‑digital future.
Looking ahead, Zelnick expressed confidence that the lack of a disc launch won’t hurt Take‑Two financially and hinted that physical media may persist in niche forms—much like vinyl records—though he offered no timeline for any potential return.
