Rockstar Games confirmed that anyone who purchased the digital edition of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will receive a complimentary upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S version. The offer, revealed alongside a GTA Online update, will roll out on Thursday at no additional charge for eligible players.
The current‑generation ports, first released on March 15 2022, added substantial visual and performance enhancements. New graphics modes support up to 4K resolution, 60 fps frame rates, HDR and ray‑tracing, while the latest console hardware delivers faster load times, immersive 3‑D audio and platform‑specific features such as HDR and improved texture quality.
Rockstar timed the free upgrade ahead of the long‑awaited sequel, Grand Theft Auto VI, now scheduled for November 19 2026 after several postponements. By extending the next‑gen experience to existing owners, the company aims to keep the GTA V community active while anticipation builds for the next installment.
