Warner Bros. and the core talent behind the 2023 hit—director Greta Gerwig, writer Noah Baumbach, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling—are still at odds over contracts for a sequel. The New York Times reports that if a deal isn’t reached by December 2026, the studio will lose the entire creative team.
The original film grossed a record‑breaking $1.5 billion worldwide, prompting Warner Bros. to propose profit‑share arrangements and a $20 million salary for Gosling. However, CEO David Zaslav reportedly deemed the offers “too generous,” while a studio spokesperson says the talent’s representatives turned down a May proposal and have not submitted a counteroffer. The impasse has left the sequel in limbo despite the franchise’s commercial success.
Should talks fail, rights to the Barbie property will revert to Mattel, opening the door for another studio to produce a follow‑up. Any such film would have to be built from scratch, lacking the story and creative direction established by Gerwig, Baumbach, Robbie, and Gosling.
