A community‑built OpenPuck project gives the Steam Controller the ability to masquerade as Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation controllers. Developed by GitHub user safijari, the hack centers on an $8 Pro Micro NRF52840 board that can be flashed to replace the Steam Controller’s original wireless puck and translate its inputs to each console’s native scheme.
To set it up, users connect the board and the Steam Controller to a PC via USB‑C, flash the microcontroller, then pair the controller wirelessly. Holding the four back buttons plus X switches to Xbox mode (right trackpad becomes a mouse, currently only on Android and SteamOS), while the same buttons plus Y activate Switch mode with gyro and haptic feedback. A back‑buttons‑plus‑B combo triggers “Lizard” mode, letting the controller work even when Steam is closed. DualSense emulation works on PC alone, and the author notes that the Switch and PS3 modes have been tested on real consoles.

The project remains a work‑in‑progress, relies heavily on large‑language‑model‑generated code, and requires a 3D‑printed chassis for a proper housing. It cannot charge the Steam Controller, as it lacks the necessary pins, but it expands the device’s versatility and showcases the maker community’s enthusiasm for Valve’s hardware.
