Netflix has secured the rights for a Sesame Street movie following a bidding war with Universal Pictures. The movie will be produced by Rideback, a production company founded by Dan Lin, alongside Sesame Workshop. Details regarding the film's plot and release date have yet to be revealed, as no filmmaker has been attached to the project.
The bidding war first began with Netflix, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros., with Warner Bros. taking an early exit due to its impending acquisition. Universal Pictures had promised that Everything, Everywhere, All at Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert would be involved as producers, but ultimately lost the bid.
This is not the first time Sesame Workshop has tried to bring a new movie to life, with previous projects announced in 2012 and 2016. Netflix's involvement in the project makes sense, given its deal to bring new episodes of the show to its platform last year.
