Wizards of the Coast is rolling out Magic: The Gathering’s Hobbit expansion, a follow‑up to the 2023 Lord of the Rings set. The new product arrives as a prerelease event from August 7‑13, hits Arena digitally on August 11, and reaches tabletop shelves on August 14. It aims to capture the lighter tone of Tolkien’s earlier tale while expanding the game’s mechanics.
The set introduces three new versions of Sting, now called Sting, Bilbo’s Sword, which uses the fresh “hone” mechanic to grant +1/+0 to any creature equipped with it—a trait previously seen on dwarf cards. It also adds three One Ring cards, including “My Precious” representing Gollum’s claim. New dwarf‑focused “storied” condition triggers effects like Dáin, Lord of the Iron Hills, making opponents pay mana per attacking creature. Human cards from Laketown gain “recruit,” letting players draw and discard for a 1/1 soldier, while “amass” now builds goblin armies.
Beyond mechanics, the expansion brings adventure and saga cards inspired by Tolkien’s songs, plus whimsical elements such as dancing bears and stone‑turning trolls, echoing the charm of the Bloomburrow set. Its modest size contrasts with the earlier deluxe Lord of the Rings release, positioning it as a more focused, seasonal offering.
