Star Wars creator George Lucas will lend his voice to Illumination’s new Despicable Me spin‑off Minions & Monsters, set to open on July 1, 2026. The casting was confirmed by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri during a Collider interview, marking an unexpected foray for the legendary filmmaker into the franchise.
Meledandri said the idea emerged while co‑writer Pierre Coffin and producer Bill Ryan were developing a new character. He approached Lucas, who gave a rapid “yes,” and the studio kept details tight. Lucas could appear as an original figure or a cartoon version of himself, fitting a plot that sees the Minions wandering through Hollywood.
Lucas’s involvement stems from his long‑standing affection for the Minions, which Meledandri highlighted as a key factor in securing the cameo. The director added that Lucas is already talking about a role in the next Minions installment, suggesting the partnership may continue. The film joins Illumination’s expanding slate that includes The Grinch, Secret Life of Pets and the Super Mario Bros. movies.
