A cancelled Quake 4 expansion, Quake 4: Awakening, has been discovered and uploaded to GitHub by former XCOM 2 developer Justin Marshall. The expansion was in development at Ritual Entertainment before being scrapped due to underwhelming sales of the base game. Marshall found the build on an old hard drive and has uploaded it for preservation purposes, hoping the community can make something cool with it.
The discovery of the build has had a profound impact on Marshall, who was going through a tough time in his life. He explains that finding the expansion 'essentially saved my life'.

The expansion appears to be mostly complete, with new weapons and a mech sequence, although some elements look unfinished. With the community's help, polishing it up to release-level quality may not be beyond the realms of possibility.
