Bungie reportedly kept the plan to discontinue Destiny 2 support hidden from the vast majority of its staff until the announcement went live last week. The surprise came after the studio had just rolled out its new title Marathon, and insiders say only a handful of teams were aware of the shift beforehand.
According to a Forbes report, the decision was made earlier this year, with only the groups already working on the final Destiny 2 content and those transitioning to Marathon in the loop. Those few who knew begged leadership to inform more colleagues, but most employees only heard about the change during a post‑announcement town hall. Bloomberg added that Bungie is preparing significant layoffs and has no immediate plans for Destiny 3, while staff inquiries about job cuts received limited answers.
Bungie is now directing resources toward Marathon, confirming a future PvE mode and other major updates. The shooter has sold about 1.2 million copies as of March, and a petition urging Sony to greenlight Destiny 3 has already gathered over 200,000 signatures. Sony recently reported a $765 million impairment loss tied to Bungie's performance, underscoring the financial pressure behind the pivot.
