Atari announced, via its partner Entertainment 360, that Universal Pictures has secured the rights to develop feature films based on ten of the company's most iconic arcade titles. The slate includes Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong (listed twice) and Yars' Revenge, with the goal of delivering large‑scale action‑adventure experiences.
Atari chairman and CEO Wade Rosen said the partnership reflects the lasting cultural impact of Atari's games and expressed excitement about bringing the brand to a new medium. Entertainment 360 producer Guymon Casady, a lifelong Atari fan, added that the screenwriters see an opportunity to expand the original arcade concepts into original, adventure‑driven narratives.
The move follows earlier, largely unrealized attempts to adapt titles like Missile Command, Centipede and Asteroids into movies. Recent Atari initiatives—acquiring Nightdive and Digital Eclipse, releasing a new Jeff Minter title, and exiting the crypto space—suggest a more disciplined approach, though the author remains cautious about the cinematic quality. Still, the projects could offer nostalgic fun if they make it to the screen.
